Nissan say the 25mpg van is to be custom made for the job, This choice makes sustainable sense given the bulk of the current fleet comprises 12mpg Ford Crown Victorias, which despite some sentimental regrets has been discontinued. Rightly so too in the face of ever increasing oil prices this can only be a sensible move. Ironically the City was however legally banned from making its decision based on fuel efficiency alone. Fortunately the Nissan which is to be packed with tech features allowing it to be used as a mobile office and with a tranparent roof giving tourists a view of the sky scrapers as well as safety gizmos such as airbags and sliding doors was still the cheapest, so winning the contest.
Nissan say they will have the whole fleet running off electricity by 2017. Way to go New York and Nissan. Ford had planned to build its vehicles overseas, while Nissan plans to build them in Mexico, then put final touches on them at a New York City-area facility. About 70 percent of Nissan vehicles sold in the U.S. are made in the U.S., according to the automaker.
